The Arts guide that allows you to discover local art – everywhere! (The app currently has information primarily for Central Ottawa, but is expanding quickly)

SmARTstudio is a new mobile gallery and directory that helps connect people to the Arts community in their area.

Ready for some culture after dining out at your favourite restaurant, but you forgot to check what was happening before you left the house? No problem! SmARTstudio shows you the venues nearby and events going on around you RIGHT NOW (and what’s coming up).

Like to shop for art when you travel, but don’t have time to research everywhere you’ll be going? SmARTstudio connects you with local artists and galleries at the touch of a button, allowing you to preview what they have to offer before taking precious time out of your trip.

Want to take a walk and discover the creative side of your city? SmARTstudio shows the location of public art, as well as information about the artist and work.

Known issues: We have identified and corrected a minor bug in the app but unfortunately the update was not reviewed by Apple in time for the competition (and due to contest rules the application cannot be updated during the competition period.) Details - after viewing a Venue listing other profile images may not load. Solution - to view images for artists, public art, and events, terminate app and re-open. The update will be made available after the contest closes!

The value it provides to residents

Art is experiential - which means that you have to be there to fully appreciate it! By using GPS to locate artists, venues, events, and public art locations that are nearby, the app makes it easier for the public to connect with their local arts community.

The app benefits the Arts in the city by improving the visibility of independent artists and venues, as discussed in a recent article published in Unfolding web magazine:
